If you need to get from Durham railway station to Durham University or back at peak times Monday-Friday, there is a half-hourly bus service. It costs £1 per single journey, and no-one much seems to use it: I caught it a few weeks ago and was the only passenger. This makes it a quite extraordinarily good value alternative taxi service, especially when it is raining.
The service is the 40B, and details of its route and timetable can be found here.
