Deluded Davis ignores voter apathy

Unshockingly, David Davis won the Haltemprice and Howden by-election easily yesterday. His stance against eroding civil liberties was a very noble one, and it was good to see a mainstream politician doing something suprising, rather than just towing the party line.

However, his claim that the result was a 'spectacular victory' is patent nonsense. The turnout was 23,911, or 34.03% of the electorate, and Mr Davis won 17,113 of the votes cast. That means that fewer than 25% of the people in his constituency thought he was worth voting for. If persuading 75% of the voters not to vote for you counts as a 'spectacular victory' I'd love to know what a 'spectacular show of disinterest' looks like!
