Terminal 5

With around 20,000 items of luggage to sort out, BA and BAA are apparently getting a company in Milan to process bags. How are they getting the bags to Milan? Are they putting them on planes and flying them out of Terminal 5? If so, why can't they just fly the bags to the places they're supposed to be instead?

Ignoring this puzzle, given recent events (and BA's track record generally), isn't there a high risk that the luggage will get lost on its way to Milan, creating the exciting new phenomenon of quantum luggage, where air passengers' bags are simultaneously lost in two different places, neither of which is where the passenger is?
